Reading for Pleasure: Transforming Your School's Reading Culture (TSRC)

 
A series of 5 sessions aimed at primary English Leads.  Participants will engage deeply with reading for pleasure pedagogy and leadership theory to transform their school's reading culture. 
Sessions will be held at Burley Woodhead CE Primary  School, LS29 7RQ and virtually on the following dates:

Early Language Development Training

We are delighted to be delivering the English Hub Early Language Training Programme in 2023-24. The Early Language Training Programme is a six-session programme and delivered over three terms. The programme has been developed by a group of English Hubs with support from ICAN, the children’s communication charity.  It will enable participants to gain an understanding of ‘typical’ language development, help teachers to identify children who may not be developing language skills as expected and provide practical classroom skills and techniques for quality first teaching in Reception and Key Stage One.

Sessions will be held in person at Newby Primary School, BD5 7DQ and virtually on the following dates:

Session 2 Monday 4th December 2023 9.30am-12.30pm

Session 3 Monday 22nd January 2024 9.30am-12.30pm

Unlocking the Reading Framework Showcase

These FREE showcase events are an opportunity to develop your knowledge and understanding of the Reading Framework, see practice in action, reflect on your own practice and develop an action plan for improvement.

The session will cover:

  • The imortance of reading and a conceptual model 
  • Language comprehension
  • Word reading and spelling
  • Children at risk of reading failure
  • Leadership and management
  • Building on the foundations with older pupils

Lesson visits will include:

  • Reception - language rich environment and effective adult interactions
  • Year 1 - reading practice sessions
  • Year 2 - developing fluency
  • Year 4 - explicit teaching of comprehension skills
  • Year 5 - using dialogic talk to support reading development

Following on from the success of our Ask a Literacy Specialist events we are pleased to announce that we will be hosting more sessions throughout this academic year.  
 
These FREE sessions are designed to give you the opportunity to ask any question you may have on:
 
  • early language development
  •  phonics and early reading
  •  promoting a love of reading  
The sessions run remotely on a number of dates throughout the year.  The next scheduled sessions will be on :

Kelly Ashley is a professional developments facilitator, author of Word Power and university lecturer.  She is a specialist in the primary English curriculum with particular interests in reading for pleasure and vocabulary development.  Kelly has previously supported the Burley Woodhead English Hub summer conference and we are excited to welcome her back to deliver reading fluency training to schools.
